DAWN: Promoting Gender-Based Drug Use Prevention and Recovery

The GEA Initiative

Recently, UNICRI has broadened the scope of project DAWN, to develop a major outreach activity to address gender-based vulnerability, especially related to drug addiction, and to enhance the protection of vulnerable women worldwide, with the creation of the GEA initiative, for the establishment of a Centre for Promoting Gender Equality and Addressing Gender-Based Vulnerability. The Centre aims to contribute to the Third Goal of the Millennium Declaration, with the development and testing of innovative prevention and recovery models and strategies, through the establishment of regional, national and local initiatives. The Centre aims at establishing itself as an authoritative reference point for governmental and non governmental agencies, the civil society and the international organizations on gender issues related to vulnerability and protection of vulnerable subjects.

UNICRI is currently seeking support to reach out to other regions, including South East Asia, in which the Centre can act as a catalyst of initiative to prevent gender related violence, sexual exploitation and abuse of young boys and girls, improve knowledge of the condition of vulnerable subjects and support policy makers in mainstreaming gender in their health and social policies agendas.
