| The book deals with the difficult task of defining and understanding the context of organized crime in Russia and its development from the 1990s to nowadays. It mainly aims at stimulating students and criminal justice practitioners to address the issue of the so-called Russian mafia from a different perspective, one that encompasses language, statistics and history, as well as the more academic nature of the phenomenon or its dramatic appeal. The book is divided into three parts, dealing respectively with language and the media, the roots and origins of the mafia in Russia as well as its development in recent times, and the links between criminal organizations, business and law enforcement responses. The author provides a unique and in-depth point of view as he was the only American to work for the Organised Crime Control Department of the Soviet Police before the collapse of the Soviet Union. || |
