 TITLE
MAFIA: INSIDE THE DARK HEART
 ABSTRACT
In this book the author traces a detailed profile of the Sicilian mafia, from its origins in late nineteenth century to nowadays. The book explores the reasons why the mafia developed in the first place, and also the opportunities it had to grow and enlarge its activities and to expand overseas, in America. Great attention is devoted to analyzing the links between the mafia and the Italian political elite. The author sees the “fall” of the Sicilian mafia in the civil war between the families which took place in the 1980s, and the great number of arrests over the years that followed the killing of Falcone and Borsellino, the two magistrates which led the so-called “maxi-trials” against the mafia chiefs.
