of minors and young women from Nigeria to Italy
An agreement signed by the Nigerian Government and UNICRI

In view of the implementation of the project "Preventing and Combating Trafficking of Minors and Young Women from Nigeria to Italy", funded by the Italian Cooperation, an agreement has been signed by the Hon. Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Michael Kasse Aondoakaa (SAN), on behalf of the Federal Government, and Ms. Angela Patrignani, representative of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute - UNICRI.

The official ceremony was attended by the Italian Ambassador H.E. Massimo Baistrocchi, the Executive Secretary of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP), Ms. Carol Ndaguba, Resident Representative of the United Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Ms.Dagmar Thomas and UNICRI delegation.

The project, designed and implemented by UNICRI in cooperation with UNODC, Nigerian institutions and NGOs, will last 24 months and is intended to help in reducing the trafficking from Nigeria to Italy. It addresses the problem of trafficking in a comprehensive and integrated way by taking its multifaceted dimensions into consideration and by tackling different institutional levels and geographical locations.

The programme will develop different strategic components, such as: the empowerment of minors and young women to prevent trafficking and to foster successful reintegration of victims; NGOs capacity building and networking to strengthen their work with victims and potential victims of trafficking; institutional strengthening to implement appropriate actions in the fight against trafficking; assessment of lessons learned and dissemination of best practices in view of future anti-trafficking initiatives.

The project will take advantage of the best practices resulting from a previous innovative project implemented by UNICRI to counter trafficking in minors and young women from Nigeria into Italy for the purpose of sexual exploitation. The activities will be carried out in Italy and in Nigeria.
